Tomato Tips
Use for peppers and eggplants also.
One part Alaska Humisoil to one part sand and one part peat moss makes a very effective planting mix that helps tomato seeds germinate fast.
Apply Bountea Compost Tea with Root Web and M3 to the seedlings when their first true leaves appear.
Prepare the soil with Humisoil and Soil Life Starter one week before transplanting.
Transplanting: remove lower leaves on 50% of stem – dig a trench 4” deep and lay the stem diagonally in the trench – cover the stem.
Leave lots of room (2 - 3 feet) around your tomato plants for ventilation and root growth. With Bountea, roots, leaves, and stem will grow bigger and stronger.
Mulch around the base of the plants with compost or other mulch.
If you are growing tomatoes with Bountea Compost Tea for the first time on ground that has been chemically fertilized, the plants may grow very big and may set fruit late. This is due to the over-release of nitrogen.
If tomato plants grow too strongly, cut down on the application of nitrogen based nutrients (M3) and apply potassium-based products such as kelp. Prune the plants hard.
Trim all the lower leaves from tomato plants to allow ventilation and avoid gray mold. Do not allow more than 15 main shoots on indeterminate tomato plants. Prune off excess shoots throughout the season.
To avoid tomato blight (brown blotches on the tomato leaves and stem), foliar spray the tomato plants with Bountea Compost Tea that has been fungally activated. Chandrappa Gangaiah of Kansas State University, in consultation with John Evans, used compost tea to control tomato blight. Read the article abstract.
